Malawi Has scooped 29 medals amid reports that it was among the bottom three teams at the end of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Games in Maseru, Lesotho.

The Games concluded yesterday 12 December, 2021 and Team Malawi’s delegation, comprising of 84 athletes and 28 Officials, is expected back today 13 December 2021 through Chileka Airport.

Malawi National Council of Sports Spokesperson Edgar Ntulumbwa confirmed that the team had collected 29 medals.

“This is an encouraging performance and it gives us motivation ahead of the 2022 Games which we will host. The team is arriving in Blantyre on Monday 13 December 2021,”

He said.

Veronica Manda won gold in Taekwando while another Taekwando athlete Frank Kamanga won bronze.

In Boxing, Team Malawi collected six medals through Ivy Mkandawire (45-48kg), Joseph Sean (46-48 kg), Josephy Kanyinji (48-51 kg), Ledson Patson (51-54 kg), Grave Chimangeni (52- 54 kg) and Lewis Mbewe Zakeyu (60-63 kg).

Team Malawi collected 2 silver medals in Judo through Olivia Chikwapula (66 kg) and Triza Tears (48 kg). Three Judo Athletes Fortune Balalika (44 kg), Annie Gerald Njovu (44kg), and Brave Chipokosa (63 kg) also won bronze medals.

In athletics VI, Tawonga Kamwendo (200 mT13) won a gold medal while four athletes got silver medals and they included Mphatso Saukile (800m T13, Kelvin Phiri (200m T13), Moses Misoya (400m T13) and Philemon Nyilenda (200m T12).

Tennis and Swimming athletes did not win any medal. However, Team Malawi increased its medal count in athletics with three silver medals and six bronze.

Angelina Nyirenda (800m), Saidi Phiri (300m), and Farook Mphonda, Davie Gondwe, Angelina Nyirenda, and Mirriam Kachigwe (4x400m relay race) got silver medal.

Emmanuel Kamphanda (2000m), Farook Mponda (400m) and Martha Bakili (3,000m) won Bronze medals, Additional bronze medals came through Josephine Jamali, Martha Bakili, Angelina Nyirenda and Annie Ng’oma in the medley relay girls race.

Blessings Mwalule, Farook Mponda, Davie Gondwe and George Gunde, in the Boys relay race, also got bronze. Priscilla Hau, Annie Ng’oma, Mirriam Kachigwe and Hamida Feza in the girls 4x100m relay also scooped bronze.

Junior Queens won silver in Netball whereas Malawi Under 17 National football settled for bronze. by Mavuto Kambuwe
