Short distance athlete Asimenye Simwaka has received K2 Million for winning a bronze medal in 200 metres women category at the Senior African Athletics Championship in Douala, Cameroon which took place from 19 to 23 June 2024. Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) gave the athlete K1 million while Essential Tours and Travel Managing Director Chris Lusayo donated a similar amount.

Additionally, Essential Tours hosted Simwaka to a dinner at Bingu International Conference Center (BICC) on 2nd July 2024. MOC Secretary General Henry Sakala confirmed giving Simwaka the money as a token of appreciation for becoming the first Malawian to Win a Medal in 200metres at the continental showpiece.

“We know the money is not enough but we feel it will still motivate her to aim for podium-finish at other major events. We, as MOC did our part and we are delighted with Essential tours Managing Director who donated K1 million. We are glad that the company will also host Simwaka to dinner at BICC. In fact, she was given a chance to choose a hotel of her choice and she settled for BICC. The dinner will attract 20 people”, said Sakala.

Simwaka was delighted with the support

“This is quite inspiring as I am to break international records too to put Malawi’s flag on the high,” said the multitalented athlete who also plays for scorchers.

She set a new national and personal record after finishing the race in 23:05 to finish third. Simwaka set another record in the 100 meters semifinals when she ran 11:35.- Reported by Madvuto Kambuwe
