MOC has launched a programme on Environmental Management and Protection targeting schools nationwide. Speaking during the launch of the programme at Nanjati Primary school in Lilongwe, MOC Treasure General Henry Sakala said, like recreation and physical education activities, is an integral part of society which cannot ignore environmental and sustainable issues.
He said: “That is why we are here Organizing this workshop and also donating materials to help in protecting the environment through waste management activities. We are engaging school authorities and learners not just to litter waste but to assemble the waste and take it to recycling companies or dump it in a safe place so as not to cause harm to people’s lives.
“We would like to encourage environmental clubs in schools to embrace this programme. We want to reach out to all corners of the country using the sport to help preserve and conserve the environment.”
Said Sakala
MOC donated waste management equipment such as wheelbarrows, rakes and protective ware including work suits and gloves. Participants from Nanjati primary school, Chiwoko CDSS, Kawale Primary and Chisamba Secondary school.
Facilitator of the workshop William Nyirenda, who is a member of MOC Sports and environmental Commission, said the culture of environmental management in schools leaves a lot to be desired as such, the need for the programme.
“We look at sports as a means to promote a way of life. One aspect of our livelihoods is environmental management. The topic discussed is waste management and disposal in schools. “We have targeted primary and secondary schools because these are institutions that act as breeding grounds for future leaders.”
