The Malawi Commonwealth Games Association (MAW CGA) says it is geared for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games slated to take place from 23rd July- 2nd August 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland.
This was confirmed when the Malawi CGA convened a crucial meeting with representatives from eight sport disciplines earmarked for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The meeting brought together officials from Netball, Athletics, Judo, Aquatics, Boxing, Para-Athletics, and Cycling to discuss preparations, strategies, and expectations for the upcoming Games.
In an interview with the Vice President of Malawi CGA who is also the Team Malawi Chef De Mission of the Games, Francis Kakhuta Banda, said that, Malawi is leaving no stone unturned in its quest for excellence, as the meeting marked a significant milestone in the country’s journey to the Commonwealth Games and all stakeholders have ample time to prepare.
“With the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games just around the corner, Malawi is poised to make its mark on the international sporting stage and from this meeting we aimed to interrogate the training plans as well as the techniques that the earmarked disciplines are going to use to select Athletes to compete at the Games. These are the disciplines we have been monitoring and have the potential to produce medal winning Athletes,” Kakhuta said.
Cecelia Mtukule representing the Netball Association of Malawi, marked the meeting crucial because it was a platform where they have borrowed a leaf from each other as associations on how best they can prepare for the Commonwealth Games.
She added that as Netball Association of Malawi, they have put in place talent identification programme which will assist them to identify cream of players from Under21 who will beef up the national team at the Commonwealth Games.
“We have put in place training camps which will also assist us prepare for various preparatory Games; Youth World Cup and African Championship which the Under 21 and National Team are slated to compete respectively,” said Mtukule.
Malawi has participated in twelve Commonwealth Games, everyone from 1970 onwards. She last won Medals in Boxing at the Edinburgh 1986 Commonwealth Games making it a period of 40 years since Malawi brought home a Medal from the Commonwealth Games.
