Malawi joined other member countries in celebrating Commonwealth Day on 10th March 2025. The celebrations started with a fun walk from Game complex to Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, where the main event took place.
Commonwealth Day is an annual celebration that takes place in Commonwealth countries. This year’s celebrations were held under the theme ‘Together we Thrive,’ highlighting the importance of strong and connected communities that support and empower people.
In her remarks, British High Commissioner to Malawi Fiona Ritchie said she was excited that many young people participated in this year’s Commonwealth Day activities.
“I am very proud that the UK (United Kingdom) is supporting this event in Malawi, which is all about bringing people together and building connections. We wanted to make young people the front and center of the event as they are key to future prosperity in Malawi and across the Commonwealth, “Ritchie said.
Ritchie said Commonwealth Day was a good time to celebrate Commonwealth diversity and shared heritage, recognizing how cultural heritage exchange on mutual understanding fosters peace and stability.
Youth and Sports Minister Uchizi Mkandawire commended the British Government for establishing the Commonwealth.
“The establishment of the Commonwealth brought several benefits to its members countries. Some of the benefits include fostering cooperation, trade, peace, social development among member countries, among other things,” Mkandawire said.
Mkandawire said Malawi remained committed to ideals of the Commonwealth and that it would continue participating in all Commonwealth programmes.
Commonwealth Games Association of Malawi Vice President Kakhuta Banda hailed the British Government for establishing the Commonwealth. The celebrations were spiced up by several activities including games. Musician Zeze Kingston spiced up the event with a live music perfomance.
