Malawi Commonwealth Games Association in partnership with British High Commission on13 March, 2023, joined other Commonwealth countries in celebrating Commonwealth Day. The event was spiced up by various activities such as Tree Planting, sporting activities like, Judo, Archery, Netball and Athletics.

President of Malawi Commonwealth Games Association Hon. Jappie Mhango in his speech expressed his gratitude for the uniqueness of this year’s Commonwealth Day Celebration citing it is one of a kind as it has involved the British High Commission, Ministry and other high-profile dignitaries for the very first time. He further said, it has set some new standards in as far as this event is concerned.

“On behalf of the organization, I therefore wholeheartedly welcome you all.” Mhango welcomed all.

He further encouraged everyone to take part in planting trees, “We believe that if everyone takes part and planted a tree, the country’s forest cover would significantly improve and this therefore is our appeal to all Malawians.”, He said

The Guest of Honour Minister of Sport Hon. Uchizi Mkandawire commended the Commonwealth Games Malawi and the British High Commission for organizing this year’s event with a variety of activities and more publicity than in the previous years.

On her part Acting British High Commissioner read the message from his Majesty king Charles,

“This week marks the tenth anniversary of the Charter of the Commonwealth, which gives expression to our defining values – peace and justice; tolerance, respect and solidarity; care for our environment, and for the most vulnerable among us”, part of message reads.

This year’s theme was “forging a sustainable and peaceful common future.” The theme combines the active commitment of member states to support the promotion of peace, prosperity and sustainability, especially through climate action, so as to secure a better future for our young people and improve the lives of all Commonwealth citizens.

Commonwealth Day is Celebrated Second Monday of March each year.
