Malawi National Hockey Team left for World Youth 5’s Festival scheduled for December 17-21 in Ipoh, Malaysia to develop and promote Olympic Values among youths.
In an interview on Saturday, Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) President Wanthanza Mghogho said the World Youth Hockey 5’s Festival is an initiative aimed at developing and promoting Olympic Values among they youth.
He said Malawi is among 11 countries world wide with Zambia being the other African Country participating in the Games.
Said Mghogho: ”This programme focuses on suitable talent development pathways and will enhance Malawi’s competitive capabilities within the youth Olympic Games Framework.”
The Association is confident that this experience will significantly contribute to the growth of Hockey in Malawi and inspire future generation of athletes.
“He said besides the tournament, the delegation will participate in an intensive development programme through training and technical workshops. The opportunity not only provides the team with exposure to high level competition but also sets a foundation for the long term development of hockey in Malawi.” said Mghogho.
He said this will help the Association prepare for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal which will be the first Olympic Games on African Soil.
The Team has made the trip courtesy of Olympic Solidarity through Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) who facilitated it.
During the Level one hockey coaching course in Blantyre in August, MOC President Jappie Mhango announced they they will support HAM to send a team to Malaysia for the Games.
