Basketball Association of Malawi (BASMAL) is confident that the on-going coaching course will help the association to identify and groom talent from the grassroots level.

About 21 coaches are undergoing a nine-day course at CIVO Stadium in Lilongwe.

BASMAL Secretary General Peter Gomani said the coaching course came at the right time when the association intends to develop its coaches.

“We hope after this training course the coaches will be at the level we want them to be. We want our coaches to compete at international level. We have lined up a programme to enable these coaches deliver at their respective zones,” he said.

The course has been possible with funding from Olympic Solidarity through Malawi Olympic Committee

The Malawi Olympic Committee Vice Secretary General, Frank Chitembeya said the course was in line with MOC’s Strategic Plan.

“We are trying to achieve the objectives that we put in our strategic plan covering for 2017 to 2020 in which we emphasized on capacity building. This is what we are doing by drawing participants from across the country to gain technical knowledge. Through this way the sport can grow because we are empowering people that can take the sport to another level from the grassroots level,” he said.

Course Facilitator Hope Chisamanga was optimistic the coaches will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to deliver.

” It will develop coaches that will go out there to scout talent at grassroots level. I want the coaches to training kids and youthful players to understand the basics of the sport,” he said.
