Malawi’s top archer Areneo David must overcome fright as he opens the floor for Team Malawi at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games which officially get underway today in Japan.
According to a brief update from the Team Malawi Leader of Delegation Flora Mwandira, David will compete in the men’s individual 70-metre recurve event. David said he was unfazed ahead of the event, saying it is time to prove his prowess at the global event.
“Almost every athlete wants to compete at the Olympics. I know it will be tough but I will show them what I am capable of doing. I am determined to impress. I know all eyes will be on me as I compete for Team Malawi. I am hoping for a great start,”
He Said.
David did not qualify for the Games but was given a slot courtesy of a tripartite arrangement which takes into account athlete’s performances during international championships and world ranking. Last month, David was ranked third in Africa with a rating of 17.8. Egyptian Youssof Tolba led the chart with 33.325 where as his compatriot Sherif Mohamed was second with 30.5.
David alongside Judo star Boniface, Simwaka of athletics, Filipe Gomez and Jesicca Makwenda are flying the country’s flag at the Games.
Team Malawi went to Japan in three groups, with the first delegation leaving on July 10. The second team, comprising Gomez, Makwenda and swimming coach Yona Walesi, left the country on July 17. The rest of the officials followed on July 20.
