“Combat improve their self-worth, alleviate stress and cultivate an optimistic outlook. Although traditionally seen as dominated by men, combat sports have demonstrated substantial mental advantages that are especially beneficial for girls. Engaging in these sports improves psychological wellness, strengthens the capacity to recover from challenges, and increases general happiness and health. It also enables girls to face threats. As they advance and perfect different techniques, their improved self-belief can lead to greater confidence in their academic pursuits and safety,” she said.
Chikuni added that sports offers an alternative career path apart from Education as such, it should be encouraged in schools.
“There are some learners who are not good in academics, but have potential in sports and these should be encouraged to pursue their dreams in sports. It is very possible to earn a good living through sports”.
The event is first of its kind in the country and falls under Olympic Values Promotion in the women and sport section. Similar events will be conducted in Mzuzu add Blantyre.
Former Boxer Philmon Nkhakamila Banda, who trained some of the girls’ boxers, hailed the initiative by MOC.
“This is a good development as combat sport will give girls self-confidence and is part of sports inclusion. Boxing and other combat sports have been dominated by men for years, but its time more girls got involved”.
