The rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will open on July 23 next year, with the Closing Ceremony taking place on August 8.

Agreement was reached by the President of Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee and the President of International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the new dates for the Games today.

Dates in both the northern hemisphere spring and summer had been considered by organizers, following the declaration last week that the Games would take place “no later than summer 2021” because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Last week, the IOC and Japanese organizers postponed the Olympics until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

This year’s Games were scheduled to open on July 24 and close on Aug. 9. But the near-exact one-year delay will see the rescheduled closing ceremony on Aug. 8 were as the Paralympics were rescheduled to Aug. 24-Sept. 5.
